WHITEBOXX / RESEARCH & ENGINEERING
Build, buy or extend
your enterprise AI platform?
Compare three routes for your enterprise: buying a finished product, extending a platform such as Evidence OS, or building a custom application. Use the data, workflow and delivery requirements to decide.
Should you build, buy or extend?
Buy a product when its supported workflow fits your requirement. Extend a platform when reusable data, agent and workflow services cover part of the work and the business needs its own application or integrations. Build a custom system when those foundations do not fit the required process or architecture.
Assess one complete user task before choosing. Record where the data comes from, what must be calculated, how the user completes the work and which system receives the result. That makes the reuse decision specific enough to price and test.
THREE DELIVERY ROUTES
What changes between buying, extending and building?
| Route | Best starting condition | What the project still needs |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a finished product | The supported user task, data access and operating model fit. | Configuration, representative testing and the required deployment or connections. |
| Extend a platform | Reusable services fit, but business logic, interfaces or system handoffs are specific to the enterprise. | A clear boundary between the platform services and the application extensions. |
| Build a custom system | The required application or architecture needs components that available products do not supply. | Application and data engineering, model integration, deployment and an operating plan. |
WORKING REFERENCE
Ask each approach to demonstrate the relevant task.
| Approach | Useful starting job | Ask for this demonstration |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise search / knowledge assistant | Find and synthesise permitted internal knowledge. | Ask the same question with two permission scopes. Inspect retrieved passages and how an absent answer is handled. |
| Document research platform | Compare source documents across companies, periods or a diligence question. | Trace a comparative table cell to the underlying document and verify the document version. |
| Warehouse-native AI / analytics | Query governed enterprise measures close to their existing data. | Reconcile a result to the semantic definition and inspect joins, query access and cost. |
| Execution agents and workflows | Repeat a defined research or analytical task and send the results for review. | Re-run against changed inputs and inspect the calculation, change set and downstream handoff. |
| Custom reporting application | Deliver a specific user workflow across sources, calculations and existing systems. | Complete an actual reporting task from selected data to review, publication and revision. |
Expect overlap between product categories.
Snowflake documents Cortex Agents with structured-data tools, document search and custom tools. Microsoft’s architecture guidance describes several ways to coordinate agents and warns against adding agents without a useful specialisation. These are reasons to test the actual application path rather than choose a product by its category label.
Use vendor descriptions to choose what to test, then verify source access, permissions, availability and commercial terms for your environment. This is a comparison of approaches, not a vendor ranking.
Where Whiteboxx can help.
Whiteboxx develops Evidence OS as a foundation for enterprise applications and supplies the engineering to extend it. The fit is strongest when the requirement spans external and internal data, defined analytical work and business-specific software or integrations.
A project can reuse the platform’s data, execution-agent and workflow services, then add domain logic, application interfaces and connections to the systems the enterprise already runs. Each integration page distinguishes existing components from work that still needs to be built.
WORKING REFERENCE
Agree the delivery requirements before selecting a route.
| Decision | Buy or extend an existing capability when… | Build the missing component when… |
|---|---|---|
| Data and analysis | The product can use the approved sources and reproduce the actual measure. | Identity resolution, source preparation or domain calculations are essential and not covered. |
| User workflow | The existing interface supports how the team reviews and uses the answer. | The result must become a tailored report, application state or multi-system task. |
| Ownership and operation | The service model fits your access, deployment and support needs. | Specific code ownership, deployment or operating responsibilities need a custom agreement. |
Write an acceptance brief with testable requirements.
A filled example asks for a reproducible revenue diagnostic, including counterexamples and handoff requirements. It is an evaluation brief, not a vendor scorecard.
